Where these standards apply
By promoting consistency across the industry, we aim to create a more supportive insurance environment. These standards apply across health, protection, and travel insurance products, ensuring customers with pre-existing mental health conditions can find appropriate cover and receive the support they need throughout the application and claims process.
Intended to apply to providers who underwrite individuals, the Mental health and insurance standards were developed in collaboration with mental health charities and consumers, to provide clear guidance for insurers to enhance accessibility, transparency, and fairness in the way they handle mental health disclosures and underwriting processes.
Implementation of the standard
We surveyed our members across health, protection, and travel insurance to understand how the industry’s mental health and insurance standards have been implemented.
These standards are a contribution of the positive work which the industry is already doing, with some of the actions intended to drive consistency across the industry to continue to raise the bar. The actions allow firms to tailor their approaches to their individual underwriting propositions and give scope to develop new and innovative propositions.
As well as continuation to drive fair consumer outcomes for individuals with mental health conditions, these Standards are an opportunity to highlight the role of insurance products in providing support services to those with mental health conditions. These services, such as assistance programmes, access to treatments and wellbeing services aim to keep policyholders healthy, keep them in work and help them return to work when they leave due to mental ill health.
Our members commit to four standards, and their supporting actions:
Improving accessibility
Asking appropriate questions
during the application process
Communicating
decisions and cover with clarity and empathy
Transparency
While these standards are not a condition of ABI Membership, our members and relevant non-members are encouraged to use the Standards to support the needs of individuals with mental health conditions.
Alongside our members, we continue to engage with mental health charities and consumers to understand the impact of the Standards on consumers with a history of mental health conditions. More information & guidance on buying insurance & how insurance decisions are made.
